Hello Grade One and Grade Two Families,

Here is our learning plan for today!

Daily work booklets Friday page for Math and LA – (in the classroom we start our day with this foundational practice. I provide as much reading support and answer any questions needed for students to understand the concepts and then we go over them together as a class. Please encourage your child to be as independent as they can with these booklets daily and go over them together to make any corrections or clarify any misunderstandings).

Language Arts:

Poetry – Students have a copy of the poem Snowball in their package. I will read it through with them as a class during our google meet and discuss meaning. Afterwards, their job is to illustrate the poem in a way that shows the meaning and then practice reading the poem. Our beginning readers will be looking for little sight words they know while our stronger readers should be practicing reading for fluency (fluent readers sound like they’re talking – the words flow and have appropriate expression and tone). We also often underline sight words and circle rhymes on our page. They can write on the front and back of the page any way they want that makes sense, but we are careful not to obscure the words.
•Then, read a couple of books on RAZ Kids
•Go to Google classroom for Mrs. Webb’s book of the day (I will post it when available).

Math:

•Friday’s math focus is the concept of equality. I have reposted 2 videos from last spring around equality on Google Classroom. One is the story Equal Smequal and the second is an equality mini-lesson. This is new learning for our grade ones and important review for grade 2.
•Then, Login to Mathletics to complete the assigned equality activities (students are enrolled in Mathletics at their grade level and I regularly assign specific tasks to individual students – these tasks pop up as soon as they login).
•Please also try to complete any worksheets you didn’t get to earlier in the week.

PE:

•Go to Google classroom for Mr. Hayden’s daily PE video or be active any way you choose! (Mr. Hayden is providing a daily fitness video – today’s video is short and sweet and involves an outdoor scavenger hunt! If you’d just prefer a paper copy, click here.)

Social Studies – Both grades: Go to Google Classroom to hear Mrs. Gouin read the book Why I Love Canada.

Grade One – there is one more page in your booklet: My community. Skip this for now. Just leave it blank and we will do this in the classroom at a later date. Please make sure all other pages are filled in.

Grade Two – Your Learning about Landforms booklet should now be complete. Please go back and finish anything you did not get done.

Science:

Grade One – Seasonal Changes – Watch the video Patterns in the Sky and then complete the last page of your seasons booklet (Cut and paste the seasons in order).

Grade Two Exploring Liquids – Watch this Water Cycle Video. Please go back and complete any of the pages we addressed this week, but any we didn’t do, please just leave blank. We will come back to them as we work through our unit in the classroom.

Great job everyone! I deeply appreciate your efforts. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns or need any assistance.

When we return to school on Monday, please send back your child’s package as we will continue working with these materials here in the classroom.

Hello Grade One and Grade Two Families,

Here is our learning plan for today!

Daily work booklets Thursday page for Math and LA – (in the classroom we start our day with this foundational practice. I provide as much reading support and answer any questions needed for students to understand the concepts and then we go over them together as a class. Please encourage your child to be as independent as they can with these booklets daily and go over them together to make any corrections or clarify any misunderstandings).

Language Arts:

Listening Centre – Isabel and the Hungry Coyote on Tumblebooks – click the Tumblebooks link above (if you are prompted to sign in, username: tvalley password: books) and find the story Isabel and the Hungry Coyote (you’ll need to do a title search). Then, complete the listening centre page in your package
•Read a couple of books on RAZ Kids
•Go to Google classroom for Mrs. Webb’s book of the day (I’ll post it when it’s available).

Math:

Thursday math pages are labelled in your package. Today’s focus is adding 1. Most students will need some support with Page 2-D (More Less Same) and I have reposted a teaching video on Google classroom from last spring for how to do this page. It is new learning for our grade ones. The grade 2 page is the same but uses bigger numbers so the video review may be helpful if they need a refresher on the symbols.
•Use Mathletics for additional math practice with any extra time

PE:
•Go to Google classroom for Mr. Hayden’s daily PE video or be active any way you choose! (Mr. Hayden is providing a daily fitness video – today’s video is a fitness/aerobic type workout for all ages).

Social Studies:

Grade One – Staff Interview Page – Brainstorm 3 questions to ask our school staff. When we get back to in person learning, we’ll see if we can get them answered:)

Grade Two – Learning about Landforms Booklet – Watch this video that was created to celebrate Alberta for Canada’s 150th Birthday and also this Travel Alberta one. As you watch, notice the landforms, and think about this question: What types of activities and recreation can we do in Alberta because of our geography (landforms)? Then, write about what you’ve learned on the last page of your booklet.

Science:

Grade One – Seasonal Changes – Go to Google Classroom to follow along as Mrs. Gouin reads a book about the transition between fall and winter and then continue working on your Four Seasons Booklet (Colour pictures neatly with realistic scientific colours – try to complete pages 12-14 – Fall).

Grade Two Exploring Liquids Booklet – Go to Google Classroom to follow along as Mrs. Gouin continues reading our book about The Water Cycle and then complete page 11 in your booklet (All Living Things Need Water To Survive). Use words or pictures to show/tell how animals and plants use water (if you use mainly pictures, be sure to include labels!).

** Mrs. Franson, our Youth Development Coach, will be doing a live story reading with discussion for Div. 1 students on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 11:45. If you would like to participate, click this link at the scheduled time.

Great job everyone! I deeply appreciate your efforts. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns or need any assistance.

Hello Grade One and Grade Two Families,

Here is our learning plan for today!

Daily work booklets Wednesday page for Math and LA – (in the classroom we start our day with this foundational practice. I provide as much reading support and answer any questions needed for students to understand the concepts and then we go over them together as a class. Please encourage your child to be as independent as they can with these booklets daily and go over them together to make any corrections or clarify any misunderstandings).

Language Arts:

Words Sorts – In their package, students will have one of three word or picture sorts
Sort 6: -at word families – match the words and pictures together
Sort 14: C, H and CH digraphs – sort pictures into 3 columns by beginning sound
Sort 41: Short A, I and E Vowels – sort words into 3 columns by middle vowel sounds
•For all sorts, students should arrange their words and have an adult check that they are correct before gluing onto the page. Have students read you the word or picture and discuss meaning if there are any words that are unfamiliar. Sometimes the sort template does not fill evenly and students should know to put any that don’t fit onto the back of the page with their own header
•Then, read a couple of books on RAZ Kids
•Go to Google classroom for Mrs. Webb’s book of the day (I will add the link as soon as it is available).

Math:

Wednesday math pages are labelled in your package. Today’s focus is subtraction with zero. I will go over these pages during our morning google meet, but they are pretty straight forward. Most students will work through them fairly quickly. Students sometimes struggle with subtracting zero vs. subtracting the whole from itself. (i.e. 5-0=5 vs. 5-5=0) We want students to understand the difference and be quick and accurate when switching between these two types of subtraction equations using mental math

Grade One – My School and About my School Pages – Hopefully your child can answer all of these questions, but if there are any they’re not sure about, they can ask me at our afternoon google meet or send me an email:)

Grade Two – Learning about Landforms Booklet – Blank Venn diagram comparison. On Monday we compared rivers and lakes, yesterday we compared hills and mountains, today students compare their choice of landforms on the next page. Re-read and use the information in the booklet and feel free to go back and re-watch the earlier videos if you’d like.

Science:

Grade One – Seasonal Changes – Go to Google Classroom to follow along as Mrs. Gouin reads a book about the cycle of the seasons and then continue working on your Four Seasons Booklet (Colour pictures neatly with realistic scientific colours – try to complete pages 9-11 – summer). We will discuss some changes that occur in summer during our afternoon google meet but if you can’t make it, brainstorm what you know about summer with your child.

Grade Two Exploring Liquids Booklet – Go to Google Classroom to follow along as Mrs. Gouin reads a book about water and then do the Exploring water stations on page 12-13 in your booklet.

** Mrs. Franson, our Youth Development Coach, will be doing a live story reading with discussion for Div. 1 students on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 11:45. If you would like to participate, click this link at the scheduled time

Great job everyone! I deeply appreciate your efforts. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns or need any assistance.

Hello Grade One and Grade Two Families,

Here is our learning plan for today!

Daily work booklets Tuesday page for Math and LA – (in the classroom we start our day with this foundational practice. I provide as much reading support and answer any questions needed for students to understand the concepts and then we go over them together as a class. Please encourage your child to be as independent as they can with these booklets daily and go over them together to make any corrections or clarify any misunderstandings).

Language Arts:

•Non – Fiction Writing – Go to Google classroom to watch Mrs. Gouin read a book about bats and then write your own non-fiction piece about these amazing animals. You may also want to check out this short bat video
•After writing, try to read a couple of books on RAZ Kids

Math:

Tuesday math pages are labelled in your package. Today’s focus is subtraction and the big idea that numbers can be broken into parts (when we subtract, we take away part of the whole number). I will go over these pages during our morning google meet, but they are pretty straight forward. Most students will work through them fairly quickly, but others may take longer and/or need extra support to understand the Part-Part-Whole pages.
•Use Mathletics for additional math practice with any extra time

PE:

•Go to Google classroom for Mr. Hayden’s daily PE video or be active any way you choose! (Mr. Hayden is providing a daily fitness video – they are geared towards our grade 3-6 students but feel free to check them out each day).

Social Studies:

Grade One – All Families are Unique and This is My Family pages – Have a talk about your family and fill in the All Families are Unique page. Then, on the next page, have your child draw a picture of your family (with labels!) and complete the sentence starter underneath.

Grade Two – Learning about Landforms Booklet – Go to Google Classroom to follow along as Mrs. Gouin reads about and shares examples of Landforms (2 short videos). Then, complete the Venn diagram comparing Hills and Mountains (I will do an example comparison during our grade 2 afternoon google meet). If you’re interested in learning even more about landforms, you can check out this video:

Science:

Grade One – Seasonal Changes – Go to Google Classroom to follow along as Mrs. Gouin reads a book about winter and then continue working on your Four Seasons Booklet (Colour pictures neatly with realistic scientific colours – try to complete pages 6-8 – spring). We will discuss some changes that occur in spring during our afternoon google meet but if you can’t make it, brainstorm what you know about spring with your child.

Grade Two Exploring Liquids Booklet – Read though the What I am Going to Learn About Page in your Exploring Liquids Booklet together and discuss what your child might already know and not know yet. On the next page, list some things you know about water (just a few is fine, we will return to this page as we work through the unit in the classroom). Colour the Blue Planet and Me pages.

** Mrs. Franson, our Youth Development Coach, will be doing a live story reading with discussion for Div. 1 students on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 11:45. If you would like to participate, click this link at the scheduled time:

Hello Grade One and Grade Two Families,

Here is our learning plan for today!

Daily work booklets Monday page for Math and LA – (in the classroom we start our day with this foundational practice. I provide as much reading support and answer any questions needed for students to understand the concepts and then we go over them together as a class. Please encourage your child to be as independent as they can with these booklets daily and go over them together to make any corrections or clarify any misunderstandings).

Language Arts:
Writer’s Workshop – students write about any topic of their choice and add an illustration with labels (there are 2 papers with lines and a box for a picture in your package – one for today and one for tomorrow’s non-fiction writing). Encourage ‘kid writing’ i.e., Making sure that all the sounds are shown with letters that make sense. (writers also think about spaces between their words, using punctuation and upper- and lower-case letters, tidy printing, adding interesting details, and rereading their work to make sure it makes sense).
•After writing, try to read a couple of books on RAZ Kids
•Go to Google classroom for Mrs. Webb’s video reading of Over and Under the Snow

Math:
Monday math pages are labelled in your package. Today, both grade one and grade two are working on the big idea that when we add zero to a number, the quantity does not change. I will go over these pages during out google meet, but they are pretty straight forward. Grade ones work with numbers to 20 and grade 2 pages have larger numbers included. These pages should be pretty quick for most students

•Grade One – Who Am I? page and Family Survey – I will talk about some of our family vocabulary during our afternoon Google meet (son, daughter, sister, brother, cousin, granddaughter/son, niece, nephew, cousin, etc.) We will compile the data from our surveys together when we return to class in person.

Grade Two – Learning about Landforms Booklet – Read through the information about Oceans, Ponds, Rivers, and Lakes in your booklet (some students will be independent with this and others will need support). Then watch the video Oceans, Lakes, and Rivers and then complete the Venn diagram comparing Rivers and Lakes (I will do an example comparison during our grade 2 afternoon google meet).

Science:
Grade One – Seasonal Changes – Watch the video Four Seasons and Day Length and then begin working on your Four Seasons Booklet (Colour pictures neatly with realistic scientific colours – try and complete up to pg. 5)

Grade Two Exploring Liquids Booklet – Watch the video Solids, Liquids and Gases and then brainstorm what you know about liquids on the first page of your booklet (some students will come up with many ideas independently and others will need discussion and prompting to bring out their thinking – your brainstorm might include examples of liquids, characteristics or properties liquids can have, and/or ways liquids may behave or change in different circumstances) *and FYI, we will be making Oobleck in the classroom as part of our Exploring Liquids unit:)

Music: Mr. Hibberd will be providing a music lesson but at this point I am not sure how it is being shared. Once I find out, I’ll provide an update!

Thank you for support of our learning. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns or need any assistance.
