Hello Grade One Families,

If your child needs to be absent from school but is well enough to do some work, here are some foundational literacy and numeracy activities to do at home to keep their learning moving forward:

Literacy:

Read your home reading book or any other books you have at home
Writers’ Workshop – write about any topic of your choosing – you can find printable paper here or use any paper you have at home
•If you would like more structured writing, try one of these pages: Bunny Picture Prompt, Monkey Prompt, Favourite Animal Prompt
Listening Centre: Listen to a Tumblebook (link to the right) and then write about your favourite part using this page or any paper you have at home
Practice Sight words (printable resources above in the Language arts tab)
•Do some RAZ Kids for reading comprehension practice (send me an email if you need login information – link is to the right)
•Try out some of the Literacy Activities on ABCyaRhyming is an especially important skill for learning to read and write! (link to the right)

Numeracy:

Counting Practice – you can find grade 1 counting expectations here – the Number Game, in our Math tab above, is a great way to practice different types of counting
Addition and Subtraction Station worksheets – we are using this self paced, strategy-based program in the classroom starting the week of Jan 17th. Your child should be able to tell you which strategies they are working on, and which pages they have/have not yet completed – you can find printable copies in the Math tab above
•Do some Mathletics (I assign tasks to students weekly – please send me an email if you need login information – link is to the right above)
•Try out some of the Numeracy Activities on ABCya (link to the right above)
•Check out our math tab above for some addition and subtraction strategies and ways to practice doubles math facts using dice and cards.

In science, we are getting started with our Senses unit. We will finish out the school year looking at the Needs of Plants and Animals.

In Social Studies we are following up our field trip to Heritage Park by Looking at the Past and sharing our Memory Boxes. Then, we will be taking a closer look at maps and exploring Our Communities.

Please send any work your child completes back with them when they return to school. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions, concerns, or need support as you work through learning at home.

October – ELA & Math update

Hello Grade 1 Families,

It’s hard to believe that September is already behind us! Here is a summary of our learning focus in Language Arts and Math so far:

Language Arts:
•We are working hard on letter sounds in the classroom using Lively Letters. See the photo below for the letters and letter combinations (digraphs) we have learned/reviewed so far. In grade one, it is extremely important that we all know our letter names and sounds with automaticity as quickly as possible so we can get going on our reading and writing. If your child is not yet solid on knowing their letter names/sounds (ie. They know them all automatically with almost no think time), I encourage you to practice a few minutes daily until they are quick and confident. We have also begun looking at sight words. Pictured below are the first dozen we focus on. You can find sight word information and resources in our Language Arts tab above.

•Other Language Arts routines we are also working on establishing are: printing practice (lower case letter focus), white board letter sound routines, poetry reading/illustration, phonemic awareness activities (i.e. rhyming, syllables, segmenting words and blending words), non-fiction writing (this month we wrote about Terry Fox!), PWIM, and of course, reading lots of stories. Our first PWIM photo is in the picture above. It is a baby on the beach. First, we work together to name things in the picture, then we work on practicing reading and sorting/categorizing the words. Each student keeps a set of the words in their desk and is encouraged to practice and work with these words each day after finishing their daily morning work. We will explore a variety of large photographs through the year. We are also working on our speaking, listening, and questioning skills through show and tell:)

Math
•In math, we update our calendar every day and are keeping track of the number of days we have been in school (pictured below). We are also working on our general number sense through counting practice, number printing, and working with tools like ten frames. Ask your child about SPLAT! In grade one we will learn about numbers to 100. Ask your child if they can tell you the numbers that are covered up on our 100 chart below. We are also exploring patterns this term.

As always, please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments, or concerns, big or small.

Welcome to Grade One

Hello Grade One and Grade Two Families,

Here is our learning plan for today!

Daily work booklets Thursday page for Math and LA – (in the classroom we start our day with this foundational practice. I provide as much reading support and answer any questions needed for students to understand the concepts and then we go over them together as a class. Please encourage your child to be as independent as they can with these booklets daily and go over them together to make any corrections or clarify any misunderstandings). *When we don’t have Friday school in the classroom, we complete the Friday pages on Thursday too!

Language Arts:
•Poetry – I Want to be a Carpenter – Students have a copy of the poem I Want to Be a Carpenter in their package. I will read it through with them as a class during our google meet and discuss meaning. Afterwards, their job is to illustrate the poem in a way that shows the meaning and then practice reading the poem (we aim for about 10 times in the classroom). Our focus with reading poetry is reading for fluency (fluent readers sound like they’re talking – the words flow and have appropriate expression and tone). We also often underline sight words and circle rhymes on our page. They can write on the front and back of the page any way they want that makes sense, but we are careful not to obscure the words.
•After, listen, read, and complete the quiz for at least one book on Level Up on RAZ Kids
•Go to Google classroom for Mrs. Webb’s book of the day. (I will post this as soon as it is available).

Math:
•Go to Google classroom to watch any of the math videos you missed earlier this week (just scroll down to see previous day’s posts – feel free to check out both grade levels if you’d like)
•Continue working on your addition station, subtraction station, and problem-solving booklets. Students should complete at least one page from each daily and are encouraged to do more if they can. Aim for about 30 minutes of pencil/paper math work each day, either in one sitting or split up over 2 15-minute sessions (students are all at different places in these booklets and will work at significantly varying paces and some pages are easier or harder than others. If your child has a solid grasp on the concept they are working on and completes their pages very quickly, they should do a bit more. Likewise, if they are at a particularly challenging page, they may not complete it in one sitting. Please use your best judgement around what makes sense for your child and let me know if you have any questions).
•Go on Mathletics to complete the assigned tasks.

Music:
•I will post Mr. Hibberd’s music class from yesterday on Google classroom in case you’d like to watch it:)

Social Studies:
Grade 1 and Grade 2 – Go to Google classroom to hear Mrs. Gouin read the traditional Inuit story, The Walrus and the Caribou.

Thank you again for all your hard work and support of our learning these past weeks at home. I am very much looking forward to being back in the classroom with students on Tuesday morning. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns or need any assistance.

Encourage ‘kid writing’ i.e., Making sure that all the sounds are shown with letters that make sense. (writers also think about spaces between their words, using punctuation and upper- and lower-case letters, tidy printing, adding interesting details, and rereading their work to make sure it makes sense).
•I have added a photo of our ‘No Excuses Words’ to the Parent Resources page above. Please go over your child’s writing with them to look for and fix spelling errors in these everyday words.
•After writing, listen, read, and complete the quiz for at least one book on Level Up on RAZ Kids

Grade 1 – Go to Google Classroom to hear Mrs. Gouin read the book Cross a Bridge. Then if you didn’t build a bridge on Monday, give it a try today using anything you have around the house (if you did build a bridge on Monday, can you make improvements to it to make it more stable and/or better able to support weight?)
Grade 2 – Go to Google Classroom to listen to Mrs. Gouin read about different types of boats. Then fill in the Types of Boats page in your package with a drawing and information about 4 of the boats. You can also read the pages Mrs. Gouin uses on your own here.
